Have you ever felt like your body is holding onto something — even when your mind tells you everything’s fine?
I’ve had those moments, and so have many of the people I work with. The tension that settles in your shoulders after a long day. The tightness in your chest when you’re overwhelmed but can’t pinpoint why. The sudden clenching in your gut when an old memory resurfaces. These aren’t just ‘in your head’. Your body is talking.
And somatic therapy helps you listen.
With over 25 years of experience supporting individuals, organisations and communities — both here in Australia and around the world — I’ve come to deeply trust one thing: real healing happens when we feel life fully in our bodies, not just analyse it with our minds.
That’s what somatic therapy is all about. It’s not just something I do — it’s how I live. My whole life is a somatic practice. I trust my body to guide me, and that trust has led me to a life of deep fulfilment, clarity and joy. This is the wisdom I now share with others. . Let’s dive into the benefits of somatic therapy, how it works, and why it’s gaining attention as a leading holistic mental health method.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-centred approach to healing that integrates traditional psychotherapy with movement, breathwork and awareness of physical sensation. The word somatic comes from the Greek soma, meaning ‘body’ — and that’s exactly where this therapy begins.
In practice, this means gently exploring how your emotions live in your body. Rather than simply talking about stress or trauma, we invite your body to show us how it holds those experiences — and how it’s ready to release them.
I’ve seen incredible things happen when people shift from talking about their struggles to feeling through them. There’s often a quiet moment when someone says, ‘I didn’t even know I was carrying that,’ followed by a deep breath or a release that’s been waiting to happen for years.
Why Somatic Therapy? Because the Body Remembers
In my work — whether in somatic psychotherapy, movement therapy or systems therapy — I’ve witnessed time and time again how our bodies hold the stories we haven’t fully processed.
Sometimes, what we think is anxiety is actually a lifetime of pushing down emotion. Sometimes what feels like disconnection is the body’s natural response to overwhelm.
Somatic therapy invites us to reconnect — gently, safely and at our own pace.
What Are the Benefits of Somatic Therapy?
The benefits of somatic therapy are wide-ranging and deeply impactful. Here are some of the profound shifts I’ve seen (and experienced myself) through somatic therapy:
1. Emotional Release Without Retelling the Story
Clients often come to me exhausted from rehashing painful experiences in traditional therapy. Somatic work doesn’t require that. We focus on what’s happening now — how your body responds in this moment — and work from there. It’s incredibly healing to know that your story is valid, but you don’t have to keep reliving it to move forward.
2. Regulation of the Nervous System
Our nervous system is the foundation of our emotional health. If you’re constantly in fight, flight or freeze mode, no amount of mindset work will fully land. Through practices like grounding, breath and simple movement, I guide clients to shift from survival into safety — and eventually, into joy.
3. Confidence, Trust and Alignment
There’s nothing more empowering than learning to trust your own body. It’s not about finding answers out there — it’s about tuning inward and rediscovering the wisdom that’s always been within you. I’ve seen clients come home to themselves — to their voice, their truth, their freedom.
And I know this firsthand. My somatic wisdom has never let me down. Living from this place of body-trust has brought me the most fulfilling, aligned version of my life yet.
Supporting Anxiety, Depression and Trauma
Somatic therapy is especially powerful for those navigating anxiety, depression or trauma. These aren’t just mental health labels — they’re often physical experiences.
Anxiety can feel like racing thoughts, tightness in the chest or a restless belly.
Depression might show up as numbness, heaviness or disconnection.
Trauma often lives deep in the nervous system, outside of conscious thought.
I’ve worked with people who’ve tried everything — yet nothing fully shifted until they connected with their body. Whether through somatic psychotherapy, movement therapy or Family Constellation work, we gently reconnect to the body’s wisdom and complete the stress cycles that have been frozen in place.
What Happens in a Session?
Every session is tailored to what your body needs that day. But you might experience:
Tracking sensations and emotional cues
Breath and grounding practices for safety
Exploring embodied memories or tension
Movements to support release and integration
Systems-based tools (like Family Constellations) to untangle deeper patterns
It’s a collaborative, compassionate process. You set the pace. I walk beside you.
Is It Effective? Absolutely.
In my experience, somatic therapy doesn’t just ease symptoms — it transforms lives. I’ve seen clients who once felt stuck, anxious or overwhelmed now move through life with clarity, ease and emotional resilience. And the research is catching up, showing how these methods support nervous system regulation, reduce trauma symptoms and improve overall wellbeing.
But beyond studies, the most powerful evidence is this: you feel different in your body. Lighter. Clearer. More at home.
Final Thoughts: Your Body Is Wise
The benefits of somatic therapy go far beyond symptom relief. This approach helps you come home to yourself; your full self. It reconnects you with your body, your intuition, and your capacity to heal.
If you’re feeling stuck, disconnected or like talking hasn’t gone deep enough — your body might be inviting you to listen in a new way.
You don’t need to ‘figure it all out’ in your head. You just need a space where you feel safe to explore, feel and heal. That’s what I offer through Somatic Psychology Australia — a space where you’re supported to come home to yourself.
Because healing isn’t just about processing pain — it’s about reclaiming joy, too. And that joy lives in your body, waiting to be felt.
